In 1752, Male, the Maldivian capital, was stormed by Malabar, pirates from the south of India, specifically the current state of Kerala. The king of the Maldives is overthrown and destroyed his palace. After four months of intense fighting, the Maldivians expel the enemy and regain their independence. The national hero Muleege Hassan Maniku, from Huraa, was proclaimed Sultan Hassan Izzudheen. Since the victory over the invaders (Huravee Day) is celebrated around the archipelago.
